Murder Ballad

This song will always feel very personal to me. Like many people, I also was interested in murder ballads in country. I was playing this one at the Vinyl Tap in Nashville when I was doing a DJ gig on a trip once and when it got to the part where he said he killed the girl two guys at the bar that hadn't seemed super interested turned around and kind of cheered. It really caught my attention. At that point it clicked with me that this song was about a man killing a woman for saying No to his advances and it was one of those thoughts that just got stuck in my brain and never left. I can no longer play this song without thinking about how it represents that. Years later I did a talk at a local library about Murder Ballads and discovered that a huge amount of them are men killing women based on some form of controlling, manipulative relationship. So this song is what got the ball rolling for me to realize that. For that I will always be in debt to Charlie Stewart and I'll also always remember those two guys at the bar, who were just having beer and some dude started playing country singles.
