Sowards was a bluegrass performer and songwriter. He started playing at the age of 5 yeras old. In the 1960s he played and recorded with Bill Duncan, mainly playing mandolin, however he also played guitar and banjo with Bill Monroe at times. Duncan and Sowards band was the harmony Mountain Boys. In 1974 he formed the Laurel Mountain Boys (Laurel Mountain Band) which he played with through the 1990s. He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War, and retired from the CRX Railroad in 1996.
