Born in Wayne County WV, Browning was a performer, songwriter, label owner, and recording engineer. He wote a number of songs covered by big artists the stand out being Dark Hollow played by Jimmie Skinner, Mac Wiseman, Ralph Stanley, and even the Grateful Dead. His band was called the Echo Valley Boys. Browning released records on Island Records out of Cleveland early on, Starday, and then later on his own Marbone and Alta labels. He had a recording studio, Midway Recording Studio, where he recorded for his three labels which include the two previously named and Midway.
